THE GRAVY TRAIN
Just six months after joining Pennon Group Plc, former East Devon MP Simon Jupp has been promoted to Director of Corporate Affairs.
And what does that involve?
* Shaping Pennon’s public and political image
* Driving public affairs and stakeholder strategy
* Liaising with government, regulators, and the media
* Advising the board on reputation, governance, and policy
In other words: the ex-MP who publicly roasted South West Water during his brief time in office is now responsible for polishing its public profile.
Yes, the poacher is now the official gamekeeper. Or, in corporate speak: he's leading reputation management for the company he once accused of a “shameful” performance.
Now, starting a new job is never easy. So, to help Mr Jupp hit the ground running, we’ve dusted off Hansard — Parliament’s official transcript — for a quick refresher on what he had to say about his new employers in March 2024.
Think of it as a helpful onboarding memo... straight from his own mouth.
"I beg to move,
That this House has considered the performance of South West Water.
It is a pleasure to serve under your chairship, Mr Henderson. I am delighted to have secured this important debate, one year on from another debate that I secured on the performance of South West Water. It is another opportunity to hold South West Water to the highest possible standards in the House.
Last year, I described the performance of our water company and its historic lack of investment as “shameful”, and many of my constituents shared my point of view. This year, I want to focus my speech on the facts facing my constituency of East Devon. The public want to see evidence of improvement and delivery of the promised investment, and they want South West Water to clean up its act and our water. South West Water must deliver better services for our constituents, improve our bathing waters, and protect our natural environment. Not doing so puts the vibrancy of our coastal communities under threat.
As the MP for East Devon, I am determined to push South West Water to deliver the standards expected by local residents, visitors and businesses. I want the unacceptable pollution we have seen in Exmouth, Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton to be met with the full force of the law."
